Vania Elvira Elent Rahmadani from East Java broke the national record in the women's 400-meter pool surface finswimming event at the 20th National Sports Week (PON) in Papua.

Rahmadani clocked a timing of three minutes and 29.07 seconds in the race held at the Harapan Village Aquatic Arena, East Sentani Sub-district, Jayapura District, Papua Province, which had been licensed by the Fédération Internationale de Natation (FINA).

Rahmadani broke the previous record held by another East Java athlete Angeline Soegianto at the 2016 West Java PON, with a record time of three minutes and 30.16 seconds.

Thus, she successfully pocketed a gold medal by defeating the West Java representative Oza Feby Mulyani and Jakarta swimmer Sahla Hersa Zabrina.

Mulyani came second, with a time of three minutes and 31.59 seconds, while Zabrina finished the race in three minutes and 45.63 seconds.

Furthermore, on the first day of finswimming, the East Java contingent dominated the events by winning four out of the six gold medals contested.

Apart from Rahmadani, Bima Dea Sakti Antono, Petrol Apostle Kambey, and Janis Rosalita Suprianto were other East Java athletes bagging gold medals.

They participated in the men's 400-meter, men’s 100-meter, and women’s 100-menter pool surface finswimming respectively.

Meanwhile, their comrades -- Guntur Pratama Putra and Nadia Kusumawardhani -- pocketed the silver and bronze medals in the men’s and women’s 100-meter pool bi-fins swimming respectively.

As of October 5, 2021, at 11:00 Western Indonesian Standard Time, the East Java contingent stood fourth in the medal standings, with 26 gold, 26 silver, and 22 bronze medals as the national sporting event had run since September 22, 2021.

Jakarta remained unshaken in the first place of the standings followed by West Java and the host, Papua.
