Maria Goreti Samiyati from Jakarta has broken the national record for the women's 1500 meter T54 or wheelchair racing at the XVI Papua National Paralympic Week (Peparnas).

In the competition, which took place at the Lukas Enembe Stadium, Jayapura, on Monday, Samiyati successfully clinched gold with a record time of 4 minutes and 28.65 seconds.

She broke the previous XIV Riau Peparnas record made by Awin Listyowati of 5 minutes and 31.70 seconds.

In Monday's race, Evy Yunita Pohan from North Sumatra secured the silver medal with a time of 5 minutes and 17.35 seconds, while Fokriani from Papua won the bronze medal with a time of 6 minutes and 03.81 seconds.

Meanwhile, West Java's Rina Nuryani came fourth with a time of 6 minutes and 14.84 seconds, while East Kalimantan athlete Nana Fitriani came fifth with a time of 9 minutes and 24.25 seconds.

According to Samiyati, this was the second time she has participated in Peparnas. She made her Peparnas debut in the XV West Java Peparnas in 2016.

"In West Java, I participated in the 100, 200, and 400 meters. I got one gold in the 100 meters, bronze in the 200 meters, and lost in 400 meters," the Jakartan athlete said.

The XVI Papua Peparnas is being conducted in two clusters: Jayapura city and Jayapura. At least 1,985 athletes from all provinces — except West Sulawesi — are participating in the event featuring 12 sports: powerlifting, athletics, boccia, badminton, chess, judo, shooting, archery, swimming, cerebral palsy football, wheelchair court tennis, and table tennis.

Vice President Ma'ruf Amin officially opened the XVI Papua National Paralympic Week (Peparnas) at the Mandala Stadium in Jayapura city on November 5, 2021.
