Papua residents have praised President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) for fulfilling his promise to attend the closing ceremony of the 16th National Paralympic Week (Peparnas) at Mandala Stadium in Jayapura on Saturday.

“What makes the closing ceremony of Peparnas perfect is that President Jokowi has fulfilled his pledge to attend it,” Ronald Manoach, a Jayapura resident, told ANTARA on Saturday.

He said the Papuan people’s appreciation also extended to athletes and officials from different provinces who had come to the province for the event.

“We highly appreciate Papua athletes who have won most medals in the National Paralympic Week,” Manoach, who is also a commissioner at the Papua Provincial General Election Watchdog (Bawaslu), remarked.

During the closing ceremony, the people of Papua showed great enthusiasm and support for the quadrennial event for people with disabilities, he said.

“This could also be from the higher number of invitees, guests, and spectators who were present at the Mandala Stadium in Jayapura,” he added.

The Peparnas XVI saw participation from 3,609 athletes from all provinces of Indonesia, except West Sulawesi.

Twelve sports were contested at Peparnas, which was hosted by Jayapura city and Jayapura district: powerlifting, athletics, boccia, badminton, chess, judo, shooting, archery, swimming, cerebral palsy soccer, wheelchair tennis, and table tennis.
